Betty's Bubble Workshops

What a lovely time I had at Cowslip Summer Fair - two days of lovely people, amazing creations and a fabulous setting. Here's some exciting news! Over the weekend, enough people expressed an interest in a workshop to make it something that I'm now trying to arrange! Of course, it's open to others in the South West, too! My initial plan is to offer a Memory Pocket Book workshop. If you'd be interested in that, please message me (via Facebook or and let me have a rough idea of where you'd be coming from - I'm aiming to try and arrange a venue that's central to those who'd like to come and then I can work out the cost based on the hire of a hall etc. There's no firm commitment at this stage! Please also keep an eye on my Facebook page, the Events page on my website and on this blog for information and updates. If you don't want to do a Memory Pocket Book workshop but would like to be kept on the list for any future workshops, please let me know. If this goes well, who knows where we could do a workshop next!

Betty's Memory Pocket Watches

A new product for the website this week! These are vintage-style pocket watch cases. The back can be removed so that ephemera can be kept inside. These have a vintage photo, lace, text and bingo number along with a vintage-style cog but, of course, you can put whatever you like inside. They're on a piece of vintage silk sari ribbon. Perfect for keeping your special memories close to your heart. Betty x

Memories In My Pocket

I've been wanting to create these for a while now.
When my mum was waiting for me to be born, she read a book called 'The Country Child' by Alison Uttley. An extract from that was in a book that I loved as a child - 'Magic In My Pocket'. I love pockets and always seem to have a collection of things in them - shells, toffees, tiny keys, scraps of paper, threads, old buttons and fabric.
A felted fabric pocket mounted on linen in a box frame with vintage text - 'So Well Remembered'.
The frame can be free standing or hung on the wall.
Memories (written on paper or small items) can be kept safely in the pocket.
The text can be changed - the pocket could be used for good wishes at a wedding, birthday or any special occasion, memories of a person, place, holiday or time.
Pockets can be made with fabric of your choice.
A pocket full of memories, hopes, dreams and love.

Betty's Memory Frames

I have six of these frames. Each one contains fabric, lace, a feather, vintage book text, an original photograph and other paper ephemera. The frames are double sided, glass with a metal surround and a small rod slides across at the top to close them. There's a fabric tie to hang them up by. They're not fixed shut so you can put your own memories in. Lovely! Betty x

Betty's Brooches and Clips

Things I've made lately...
Vintage dolls made into brooches to remind you of childhood games and happy days.
Photo or note clips made with vintage wooden cotton reels - the best thing is, you can still use the thread if you like!
Available at the Tavistock and Vintage Textile Fair on Saturday 30th April 10.00 - 4.30pm in Tavistock Town Hall.

Betty's Book Experiments

More experimenting today...

It's amazing how each girl has a character all of her own!

I tried mounting the blanket onto fabric - it didn't work so well as the two textures were so different and the blanket 'gives' so much while the cotton doesn't at all (thank goodness for buttons to help hold things in place!). Using more than one layer or turning the edges under wasn't an option as the cover was then really thick.
The best result happened when I did rows of tiny machine stitching round the edge of the blanket before cutting it out; that seemed to stabilise the fabric and achieved a better edge. So, we're nearly there!
Final versions will be available at the Tavistock Vintage and Textile Fair on 30th April.

Betty's Book Covers

While the showers come and go, my experiment today is book covers. This one uses the same templates that I designed for my figure brooches but I felted them onto a piece of vintage blanket instead of stitching. I really like the softer effect.
The nightmare was the edges of the blanket and the fraying. I've felted them and have done two rows of machine stitching on each edge - I'm going to use it and see what happens.
Maybe felting the figure onto a piece of blanket and then mounting it onto cotton fabric is the answer - I'll try that next!

Happy Easter, Everyone! Betty x

Betty's Very Special Books and Bags

I was thinking about my Memory Pocket Books and Memory Bags and thought that I could make them with clothes to make them even more personal.

I found a collection of fabric, buttons and pieces of a shirt that belonged to my dad - it had been in a drawer for 36 years.

I've made two books - one for me that I filled with my memories of dad and one for my sister which will be on its way to her next week.

Having made these, I'm offering books and bags made with your special clothes and fabrics. The books can have more than one double page - the choice is yours.
A very special way to keep your memories of a      person, place or day close to you.

Betty's adventures with buttons and wire!

I had loads of buttons…and I had some wire…these brooches are the result of lots of playing around with ways of attaching buttons to buttons. Betty x

Betty's been making necklaces with a message!

I've really enjoyed making these. The rectangular discs are pewter and the circles are aluminium. It's taken quite a bit of practise to get  the positioning of the letters right - a lot of attempts have gone in the bin! I love the fact that they look better for being not straight - it adds to the quirkiness of the message and the necklace. (Mind you, I wish I could make these pictures straight so that they line up - it's driving me a little bit up the wall!) More words can be stamped onto the aluminium circles - usually just one or two on the pewter. I was surprised at just how different the stamping feels on these two metals - the pewter is so much softer and it's easy to end up with a misshapen piece after stamping just a few letters. The circles are on a piece of ribbon (one metre is enough for a necklace or to tie your message on to whatever you like) and the rectangles are on an organza and cord necklace. They're mounted on a card made with a vintage book image so they're ready to give as a card and gift in one! All are now on the website and will be available at craft fairs starting on 13th February in Tavistock - circles £5.00, rectangles £6.00. Bx
